Learning outcomes

The course aim to develop in their students a basic level of skill in comprehension, analysis and presentation of Roman Public Law. Students are expected to know primary sources of Roman Law and to understand european and transoceanic legal systems that derive from it. They are expected to think hard about what they have read, so as to develop views not simply about what the law is, but also about why it is so, whether it should be so, how it might be different, and so on, drawing on moral, philosophical, social, historical, economic and other idea.

Course contents

The course on History of Roman Constitution, Legal Science and Criminal Justice is organized in seminars. Through literary and legal texts, european and worldwide cultural heritage, will be analized Criminal Justice in comparative perspective: the lessons will be held in collaboration with Prof. Elena Valentini (Criminal Procedure).

Students will be involved in debates, especially on the following items:

- tipology of punishment in Ancient Rome and today,

- freedom of speech and crimen maiestatis,

- Jesus'trial ,

- Verre and crimen repetundarum

Teaching methods

The Course will be held by Prof. Simona Tarozzi. The topics will be exposed through frontal lesson and exercitations on debates and role playing The actively participation during lesson is compulsory to final evaluation.

Assessment methods

Oral examination. Students who attend the course (attendance is compulsory.): the learning will be verified during the lectures, by involving the students in discussion and simulated court proceedings. Anyway it is possible, for all students, to agree with the professor upon another assesment methods.

To obtain credits (CFU) the student should be registered only on Almaesami (https://almaesami.unibo.it/almaesami/welcome.htm ).
