75529 - Advanced Methods of Stratigraphic Analysis

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Geology and Land Management (cod. 8027)

Learning outcomes

To develop advanced techniques of stratigraphic correlation, including predictive models of subsurface stratigraphy, use of geotechnical data in stratigraphy, application of sequence stratigraphy principles, core analysis.

Course contents

Stratigraphic correlations in a source-to-sink context. Critical analysis of sequence stratigraphy. Reservoir stratigraphy and hydrostratigraphy. Paleosol stratigraphy and fluvial architecture. Paleovalley systems. Forced regressive deposits. Condensed sections. Geotechnical tools (piezocone penetration tests, pocket penetrometer) and use of geochemical data in stratigraphy. Parasequences. Core interpretation and facies analysis.
