28360 - Mathematical Physics 1

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Mathematics (cod. 8010)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the mathematical-physics bases necessary to understand the founding concepts of classical mechanics, is able to solve the basic exercises on the motion of particles and to identify the physical origins of classical mathematical problems.

Course contents

  1. Introduction.
  2. Motion in one dimension.
  3. Motion in two dimensions.
  4. Dynamics and Newton laws.
  5. Circular Motion and gravitation.
  6. Work and Energy.
  7. Harmonic and Circular motions.
  8. Theory of Special relativity.
  9. Diffusive Motion.

Readings/Bibliography

Textbook:

  • "Physics" by D. Giancoli. Pearson Ed.

Other suggested readings:

  • "The Feynman Lectures on Physics", Feynman • Leighton • Sands, open source Caltech.
  • "What is Mathematics", R.Courant, E. Robbins, OUP Ed.

Teaching methods

Each lecture will consist of a first part with the introduction and discussion of concepts followed by the solution of examples and exercises.
