FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions on the PhD Call for applications and selection procedures

We recommend that before reading the FAQ you carefully read the Call for Applications for the PhD Programme you are interested in.

General Information on the PHD Programmes

1. I couldn't find any details about the PhD Programme I’m interested in, where can I find them?

All the specific information related to PhD Programmes are included in each PhD Programme's webpage. If a Call is open, each PhD Programme Table available on the University website (select the relevant PhD Programme > “More information” > “PhD Programme Table”) contains details of available positions and scholarships, exam dates, assessable documents and evaluation criteria.

2. I’m a person with disability (with specific supporting documentation). How am I supported during my PhD career?

In order to participate to the admission exam, special arrangements (i.e. “adaptations”) are available upon request when applying on Studenti Online. Moreover, the Unibo Service for students with disability (Servizio per gli studenti con disabilità e con DSA) is available to evaluate specific individual needs.

3. Can I attend a PhD programme and another university course (bachelor, master, specialisation school)?

Yes, the law allows simultaneous enrolment in the same academic year in a PhD programme and another university course. There are two exceptions:

  • the simultaneous enrolment in two different PhD programmes, which is only possible if a co-tutelle agreement with a foreign university has been signed;
  • the simultaneous enrolment (also known as "frequenza congiunta") in a PhD programme and a medical specialisation school, for which specific authorisation is required from the bodies of both programmes.

To find out more, please consult the following page: Simultaneous Enrolment in different programmes.

 4. Under which circumstances am I allowed to suspend my PhD career?

You can ask for the suspension for the following purposes:

  • birth of a child
  • civil national service (“Servizio Civile”)
  • serious and documented illness
  • serious and documented personal and family reasons

With the exception of the birth of a child (for which the parental law that applies to workers is followed), suspension may be requested for a minimum period of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months, renewable if necessary.

 5. I’m currently enrolled in a PhD Programme at another University, can I move to the University of Bologna?

Yes, you can, if you meet the following requirements:

  • submit the request before the end of the first year of your PhD Programme, in order to enrol directly to the second year at the University of Bologna.
  • choose a new PhD Programme (at the University of Bologna) with similar learning and research outcomes compared to the previous PhD Programme.
  • obtain the authorization from the Academic Board of the new PhD Programme.

 If your request will be accepted, you will not receive any scholarship.

 6. What does “co-tutelle agreement for PhD candidates” mean?

A co-tutelle agreement for PhD thesis is a bilateral agreement devoted to a single PhD candidate, allowing them to conduct research activities under the supervision of two supervisors (one at the University of Bologna and the other at a non-Italian University). Such an agreement binds the two Universities to issue a double degree of “Doctor of Philosophy” after a joint PhD thesis defense. For more information, please check the related page.

 Admission Requirements

1. How can I apply for a PhD Programme at the University of Bologna?

Each year there is at least one Call for Applications for the admission to PhD Programmes and a selection procedure. The procedure is detailed in the Call for Applications and in the related PhD Programme Tables (select the PhD Programme > “More information” > “PhD Programme Table”). Any application submitted in ways other than those explicitly detailed in the Call for Applications and in the related PhD Programme Tables will be rejected (e.g., via e-mail).

2. When is the Call for Applications published?

Usually, the Call for Applications is published in late spring. We strongly suggest you to monitor the University website to get any related update.

3. Which qualifications allow me to apply for a PhD Programme?

Each of the following Italian qualifications allows you to apply for a PhD Programme:

  1. Laurea Magistrale, Magistrale a ciclo unico or Laurea Specialistica;
  2. Laurea di Vecchio Ordinamento (pre 1999 reform);
  3. An equivalent Second Cycle Degree awarded by academic institutions part of AFAM (Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale).

In addition, non-Italian Second Cycle Degrees awarded by an academic institution and equivalent to the above-mentioned degrees allow you to apply for a PhD Programme at the University of Bologna.

Applicants who are yet to obtain their Second Cycle Degree are admitted to the selection procedure on condition that they obtain their degree by no later than the official starting date of the PhD programme.

4. I attended an Italian University Master course (Master Universitari di I e II livello). Does this degree allow me to apply for a PhD Programme?

No, remember that University Masters issued by Italian Universities are not equivalent to a Second Cycle Degree. In order to apply for a PhD Programme you need a Laurea Magistrale or an equivalent non-Italian Second Cycle Degree, a University Master (either I or II level) is not sufficient.

5. I earned a Master’s Degree in a non-Italian University. Does this degree allow me to apply for a PhD Programme?

Usually, the Master’s Degree obtained abroad is equivalent to the Italian Laurea Magistrale. Therefore, it should be accepted to access a PhD Programme in Italy. If you hold a Master’s Degree that gives you access to a PhD Programme in the country in which it was awarded, it is generally accepted to access further education in Italy.  Check the validity of your qualification, contacting the awarding Institution or consulting online databases such as the ENIC-NARIC. Remember that if you are admitted to a PhD programme, you will be asked to submit a document proving the validity of the degree obtained abroad during the enrolment process.

6. Does my non-Italian degree give me access to a PhD Programme in Italy?

In order to apply for a PhD Programme in Italy, you need to have a Second Cycle Degree that gives you access to a PhD Programme in the country in which it was awarded. Check the validity of your qualification, contacting the awarding Institution or consulting online databases such as the ENIC-NARIC.

7. What are the language requirements to apply for a PhD Programme? Do I need a language certification?

Each PhD Programme has its own language requirements. For more information, after the Call has been published, check the PhD Programme Table (select the PhD Programme > “More information” > “PhD Programme Table”).

8. Do I need a supervisor to apply for a PhD Programme?

No, you don’t. You will be assigned a Supervisor by the Academic Board, after the enrolment process. We kindly suggest to check the PhD Programme Table (select the PhD Programme > “More information” > “PhD Programme Table”) for further requirements.
