Job opportunities and potential areas of employment
Carrier opportunities are related to all the positions requiring senior researchers who are able to manage, co-ordinate and carry out research and development projects in all the typical fields of civil, or chemical, or environmental and materials engineering and industrial biotechnology. In the academic year 2012/2013, the PhD programme in Civil, Environmental and Materials Engineering and that in Chemical, Environmental and Safety Engineering merged by giving rise to the new programme PhD@DICAM. Most of the PhD students who attended in the last years the PhD programme obtained a professionally satisfying employment at public or private bodies: public administration, utilities management agencies, professional companies, research institutes. The percentage of employment one year after obtaining the PhD title is 83.8%. Around 20% of the employments were obtained abroad. Around 40% remained in the academic environment at the University of Bologna or others, obtaining a permanent position or a temporary position within project contracts.

Learning outcomes
The preeminent goal is the acquisition of the knowledge needed to conduct highly qualified scientific research activities for the development of innovative technologies in the selected and state-of-the-art fields of either civil engineering, or process and chemical engineering, or environmental engineering, or materials engineering, or industrial biotechnologies.
Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates
The scientific activity of PhD students is generally devoted to the theoretical-experimental investigation of a project in the framework of the active research fields in the DICAM department; projects in cooperation with foreign universities, research centers as well as with industrial partners are warmly recommended. The PhD thesis is the heaviest task for the student; it accounts a remarkable activity of experimentation and/or modelling and/or numerical simulation of the processes investigated. The activities can be carried out both in DICAM laboratories and in other institutions. The starting point of the activity should be a wide bibliographic research about the state-of-the-art in the field of interest. Projects in cooperation with industrial partners allow to spend some time in working experiences. Education is concentrated mainly in the first year, whereas the rest of the time is dedicated to research. Autonomous development of the research plan by analyses, experiments and/or field survey. Results dissemination in particular through the doctoral thesis monograph and reviewed papers.
Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes
Purpose of the training activity is to teach the students the advanced features in the typical fields of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials engineering and Industrial Biotechnology. Seminars, lectures, meetings are organized by the Department DICAM and by the other Doctorate programmes of the School of Engineering and Architecture. Interesting opportunities are the national meetings of the PhD students in Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Attending national and international conferences is warmly recommended. The training programme is defined for each student according to his/her own previous studies. Elements of advanced courses are considered essential and they are decided by each student together with her/his tutor and according to the indications provided by the PhD board of Professors. In addition to scientific training are offered courses to equip PhD students with a range of complementary skills. They consist, as an example, in training courses concerning: Intellectual property, EU call for research funding, Academic and technical writing in English, as well as the deepening of advanced software tools. Studies should be concluded with a high score in the first two years of doctorate. For all the students, it is very warmly recommended to spend a period abroad (minimum 6 months) in universities or research centers or other institutions and to prepare the final thesis in English.
Internationalization features
All the students have to spend (with the exception of particular cases) a period of studies in the laboratories of international institutions working on the same projects of their own PhD programme; the period should last between six and 18 months. During his/her stay, the student should learn new experimental techniques and/or should develop specific modelling procedures which are complementary to those existing in DICAM. “Exchanges” of PhD students coming from other universities are regularly approved (6 months at least) to spend some time in DICAM working on common projects; some students are also hosted according to other specific international agreements (ERASMUS mundus, Leonardo programmes, EU projects ecc.). Research activity abroad is scheduled lasting at least six months, usually during the second and central phase of the research. In order to facilitate participation of foreign students the admission competition is carried out by examining application documents and with a web-interview; the applicant can choose the language of his/her examination between Italian or English. The PhD Course is open to include positions reserved to foreign students. Courses and seminars are given in the language the lecturer feels more useful for an effective formation and information of students.
Expected research results and products
In addition to the final thesis, the ability of the student to carry out research activity should be documented by some presentations at international congresses as well as by some papers published in international scientific journals relevant for the typical fields of PhD programme. The development of national and international patents is greatly appreciated.
