We reconstructed area computation of irregular surfaces using a 2D digital image, an estimated depth map, and a reference sample (in this case, a circle of known diameter) reported near to the region of interest where the measuring shape is located.

One key component of wound care is measurement. Determining how well a wound is healing demands careful and consistent measurement. But what happens if different care teams measure differently? It can introduce inconsistency, errors, and treatment problems into the healing process.
The introduced method involves the application of artificial intelligence models for the automatic lesion area estimation, starting from its digital picture. The method is completely automated and it is able to provide accurate, standardized, objective, and reproducible measurements, without any effort by the user/clinician.
The possibility to automatically determine the lesion extension could determine a significant speed up during the clinical evaluation, providing more robust measurements and improving the consequent patient care. The integration of this technology in a smartphone device leads also to remote medicine applications, facilitating the access of the patient to advanced and accurate medical treatments.
