Learning outcomes
The fundamental aims of the Phd in Sociology and social research are the formation and improvement of highly qualified professionals with a strong and well educated attitude for the elaboration, organization and direction of empirical and theoretical research. The Phd is organized to educate professionals able to sinthetyse: 1) theoretical and sociological reflections with the most important and innovative emerging social issues; 2) work field with qualitative and quantitative methodologies; 3) the fundamental research with the empirical and applied one. To achieve those goals the students are invited, in the first year, to participate to a methodological seminar, designed to improve their quantitative and qualitative techniques of sociological research. Along the whole period of study the students are invited to participate to regular methodological laboratories, organized to make them able to utilize statistical programms for the social sciences, as SPSS and Stata.
Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates
During the Ph.d program the students must acquire both the theoretical and empirical competences necessary for the development of their personal and empirical research. Particular relevance is given to their methodological and technical skills, with a strong programme of laboratories' work. Those skills include bibliographical research, field research, laboratory work, attendance of seminars, lectures and lessons, elaboration and presentation of papers. Every year the students must report to the teaching staff on the progress of their research.
Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes
The Ph.D students are required to attend a methodological course of 90 hours, including specific units dedicated to quantitative and qualitative methodologies; research tecniques; utilization of data base; elaboration of a research design; evaluation of research's results. They have to attend specialized seminars organized by the teaching staff and they are also invited to select national and international seminars, summers school and conferences, related with their Ph.D thesis. They have at disposal a specialized library with all the main sociological journals and reviews: a laboratory where they can actually improve their methodological competencies, an several dedicated pc stations. Each student is attributed to a internal tutor which sustains and leads the personal research of the student.
Internationalization features
Informations about the Phd are disclosed by means of institutional e.mai sended to a network of foreign institutions with whom we collaborate. Our Ph.D students with scholarsip are requested to spend six months of their research period abroad, in institutions which already have signed an agreement with the Department of Sociology. They are invited to partecipate to international conferences, summer schools, as listeners or tutors. The teaching staff organises every year at least one international lecture with some of the most relevant sociologist. The partecipation of foreign graduate students is promoted too. Beginning in 2012 we applicate for the international Program Erasmus Mundus ARTESS (Argentina) and we are ready to accept other forms of international collaboration.
Expected research results and products
The students have to focus on the main sociological paradigms and to connect it with the methodological outomes, in order to elaborate a personal and possibly original research style. To achieve this goal they are encouraged to present the results of their activities at conferences and scientific journals, preferably with peer reviews. In particular, in the first year students have to present a documented bibliography for the thesis and a detailed project of research. For the second year they have to present to the teaching staff the results of the first year of research and to discuss it by a paper that will be possibly published on peer reviewed scientific journals. In the third year they are tell and helped to partecipate to a national or international event in which to discuss their thesis, and to publish a paper in national or international reviews.
