Curricula and Research topics

The PhD Program is designed for the advanced study of functional themes and geographic areas in the context of global processes and international interactions, in an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will focus on how several actors affect (and are affected by) globalization on issues such as ideologies, balance of power, national and international conflicts and stability, innovation strategies, sustainable development, the functioning of international organizations and institutions and their interaction with the changing position of nation-states and local or regional communities within a globalized world process, the role of non-state actors and non-governmental organizations, and the effects on cultural practices and cultural and gender identities. The specific thematic analyses are integrated with the broader context of comparative analyses of global transformation both historically and contemporarily, expanding their theoretical and methodological foundations and embedding them into the debate on global actors and strategies. Research topics and projects will analyze the role of, and the relationships between, people, cultural habits and social knowledge, institutions, organizations and states in shaping globalization dynamics (e.g., global and regional governance, sovereignty and social legitimacy, democratization, military conflicts, “new wars” and terrorism, migrations, technological innovation, sustainable development, human rights, corporate social responsibility, religious and cultural transformation, environmental and health challenges, demographic transitions and urbanization, economic and institutional growth, transnational actors and civil society, globalized markets). The multi-disciplinary approach is explored through the lenses of different academic which are articulated in four main areas:

  • International relations (14/A2, 14/B2)
  • Political history (11/A3, 14/B2)
  • Political theory (14/A1, 14/A2)
  • Society and development (14/B2, 14/C2).
