Curricula and Research topics

Neoplastic pathologies of the mammary gland and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. Environmental carcinogenesis and primary prevention of cancer. Screening of substances or complex mixtures and evaluation of the risk associated with exposure to carcinogenic factors. Determination of early molecular markers of exposure to carcinogens. Palliative medicine. Immunoprevention and immunotherapy of tumors. Oncology and targeted therapy of musculoskeletal sarcomas. Genomics and proteomics of sarcomas for the identification of prognostic and predictive factors. Research for the development of new therapies in pediatric onco-hematology, particularly neuroblastoma, acute myeloid leukemia, lymphoproliferative diseases of B cells (leukemias and lymphomas). Research in radiotherapy, oncological radiodiagnostics and radiobiology. Rare tumors. Stem cells. Acute and chronic myeloproliferative syndromes. Lympho(immuno) proliferative diseases, monoclonal gammopathies and multiple myeloma. Molecular basis and genetic studies of leukemias and lymphomas. Research and development of innovative and targeted drugs against adult oncohemopathies, in particular acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Molecular pathology of infections associated with implants: search of virulence factors of opportunistic microorganisms as etiologic agents of periprosthetic infections and pathogenic mechanisms. Plant toxins with N-glycosilase activity: study of the mechanisms of cytotoxicity and molecular targeting of drugs. Alterations of protein glycosylation in pathological processes. Relationships between changes in ribosome biogenesis, cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Immunology, genetics and epigenetics of aging, longevity and age-associated diseases (e.g. type II diabetes, Alzheimer's disease). Study of allelic polymorphisms to identify risk factors associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Job opportunities and potential areas of employment
Our PhDs find employment in public and private research institutions, both national and international (mainly European and U.S.), in the healthcare system, including national research and care institutes (IRCCS) and in private laboratories and clinics.

Learning outcomes
The learning goals of the Ph.D. Program are as follows: 1. We develop graduates with advanced knowledge of literature and theory in the fields of Oncology, Hematology and Pathology. 2. We develop graduates with theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills. 3. We develop graduates capable of producing original research of quality appropriate for publication in high-impact scholarly journals. 4. We develop graduates capable of producing translational research that applies to clinical challenges the avanced knowledge originating from laboratory research.
Activities to be carried out by Doctoral candidates
The activity is largely devoted to translational and clinical research in the fields of oncology, hematholoy and pathology. The activities include research in the laboratory, field research, clinical research, and the use of large advanced equipment in the field of molecular biology and genetics. The PhD program therefore directs towards preclinical and clinical research applications and offers wide opportunities to trainees to develop their activities in centers of scientific and clinical excellence.
Research training activities compliant with the Doctoral programme's learning outcomes
The PhD program includes laboratory and/or clinical research activities, organized by the Supervisor of each PhD student, and teaching activities organized by four entities: the University of Bologna, the pool of medical PhD programs, the PhD program itself and the Supervisor of each PhD student. 1. The University organizes courses on basic research management, research systems, research financing, intellectual property and business management. Advanced courses will be organized for PhD students with specific interests. 2. The pool of medical PhD Programs organizes courses of scientific English (24 hours, in collaboration with Centro Linguistico d’Ateneo) and courses on safety in the biomedical environment (12 hours, in collaboration with the Area Persone e Organizzazione of the University and with the safety managers of the medical Departments). 3. The PhD program organizes seminars by faculty members. Main subjects are: Biology and pathology of the cell cycle, Cell death and apoptosis, Mechanisms of cytotoxicity of Ribosome Inactivating Proteins, Genetic variants involved in longevity or age-associated diseases, Cytokines in human disease, Glycobiology and glycopathology, Molecular and cellular oncology, Carcinogenesis, Tumor immunology and immunotherapy, Diagnosis of hematopoietic and solid tumors, Cancer epidemiology and prevention, Conventional and innovative therapy of tumors, Palliative medicine, Biopathology and treatment of lymphomas, myeloma and acute leukemias, Allogeneic/autologous stem cells transplantation, New molecular technnologies for the study of hematologic malignancies. 4. Each Supervisor coordinates the attendance of specific events (meetings, workshops, grand rounds, etc.) and provides advanced bioinformatical education and tools in relation to the specific research project of each PhD student.
Internationalization features
a) International experience.
All Ph.D. students must attend research laboratories abroad in major research institutions, for at least 3 months.
b) Attraction of foreign graduates (by agreement with Iraq).
c) National and international networks of PhD.
The PhD is part of the network of the Istituto Superiore di Oncologia (ISO). This network organizes international education in molecular oncology at graduates who wish to undertake or continue research in this specific field. The ISO network brings together 15 Italian Uuniversities, including the Universities of Naples "Federico II", Genoa, Padua, Bologna, Pisa and Turin. International partners of this network include all the major oncological institutions worldwide. All network partners have a recognized expertise in various aspects of oncology and/or molecular endocrinology. The network has the purpose of mutual recognition of the formative period of research at partner institutions. Further international exchanges are bsed on the scientific networks of all members of the PhD faculty.
Expected research results and products
Papers published in international journals, indexed in PubMed (at least one full paper per PhD student during the PhD course, or within 2 years after the end of PhD), and oral/poster communications at national and international scientific meetings. Also, patents resulting from translational research and clinical protocols resulting from clinical research.
