Learning outcomes

With the historiographical discussion on the one hand, the examination of specific situations on the other, at the end of the course the student comes to an understanding of the issues of the discipline and receives adequate training on the operating side. By storing issues related to various kinds of archives (private and family archives, business archives of large and small business realities, and in particular fashion houses), students acquire awareness of contemporary reality and not just methodological preparation, but also practical, thanks to the training on filing and inventory.

Course contents

During the lessons will be discussed the debates around the business archives and fashion in particular, without neglecting the methodological principles of the archivist. Particular attention will be given to the specificity of fashion houses archives that need multidisciplinary approaches and knowledge of the products manifactured by the companies. In fact, the latter represent not only the main goal of the companies, but generally constitute the pin on which the company memory is set.
The themes will concern:
- introduction to archivistics, history, methods, languages
- public archives and private archives, reference legislation
- family archives and business archives
- archival toolkit
- "product archive": objects
- the VeAC ministerial catalog card (Antique and Contemporary Dresses) and its application between collections and archives, between public and private.
- strategies for conservation, enhancement, communication of business archive both internal and external to the companies

Teaching methods

The discipline is dealt with by presenting cases of historical business archives showing fields and limits of application of archival methods in this area where there are many margins of freedom on the part of producers and the need for historians and archivists to safeguarding sources and historical memories of this particular relevance sector for the Italian economy.
Expected visits to a State Archive and a fashion house archive.

Assessment methods

Final oral exam: a basic knowledge of the archival discipline (method, tools and reference rules) is required. The questions will be about the specificity of business archives and fashion archives in particular, referring to historiography, debates and cases presented in books and discussed during the lessons.

Student will be able to orientate himself in the bibliographic material in the program, to know the most relevant aspects of the archival discipline, gathering useful data and reflections to be applied to business archiving, with particular reference to fashion companies. Summary knowledge, training gaps and inappropriate language will be evaluated negatively.

Teaching tools

During the lessons will be simulated the inventory of a historical archive and the provision of tools related to the so-called "product archive" by testing the VeAC ministerial catalog card (Ancient and Contemporary Dresses).
Online teaching materials on the VeAC catalog card (manual, catalog card, lemmary) will be available.
