Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Docente: Barbara Ferracuti
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: ICAR/09
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Barbara Ferracuti (Modulo 1) Luca Pozza (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 0930)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, and after passing the final exam, the student possesses advanced knowledge of: wood as building material, criteria and methods to model its mechanical behavior, the most common structural schemes for modeling and calculating of timber structures, even strongly hyperstatic, the design criteria, calculation and verification of structural elements in solid wood and lamellar wood. The student has a satisfactory knowledge of the constructive details that allow the construction of a timber structure. He can also consult and interpret the main building codes and Guidelines concerning structural design, with particular reference to the use of wood.

Course contents

Wood Technology

Wood anatomy, wood-water relations, drying, bulk density, net wood and structural wood. Wood defects, reference to classification methods.

Wood for structural use

Woody species, solid wood, lamellar wood, panels and wood derivatives.

Physical and mechanical characteristics of wood. Classification of wood in resistance classes.

Influence of environmental conditions, moisture effect and load duration on resistance and deformation. Durability and degradation of wood.

The recurrent structural typologies and their dimensioning (frame structures, wall structures). Structural conception and recurring typologies. Structural Calculation according to Eurocodes and Technical Standards 2008.

Frame Structures - One-Dimensional Elements

Verification at Ultimate Limit States.

Verification at Serviciability Limit States,

Teaching methods

The lectures will be held with powepoint presentation and the use of the blackboard.

Assessment methods

Learning outcomes will be evaluated through the carrying out of a project and a final exam. Both activities enable to evaluate the expected knowledge and skills. To gain access to the final exam, the student must submit the project developped.

The final test is an oral test with a duration of about half an hour.
