Learning outcomes
The course aims to present methods and tools useful to define the mechanical behaviour of materials and to dimension simple structural components or joints stressed by static and dynamic loads. At the end of the course the student will be able to define the tensions produced by the external stresses in simple structural components or connections subjected to static and dynamic conditions.
Course contents
The rigid bodies equilibrium: forces, moments and constraints.
External stresses on components: diagrams and maximum values.
Internal tensions within components: diagrams and maximum values.
Stiffness of mechanical components.
Static moments and moments of inertia into the beam cross sections.
Mechanical properties of materials.
Endurance limit and fatigue failure of components.

Teaching methods
During the lectures the main problems associated with the design of machine components and their connections will be addressed. The practical lectures will be collective and dedicated to the real application of theoretical lessons learned in class by students.
Assessment methods
The assessment tests are written and, if elected, oral. The written part consists in three exercises to be solved in which both the conceptual and the numerical results will be evaluated. The oral test consists of an interview during which the mistakes made in the written test are analysed and some theoretical aspects are asked.
