Learning outcomes

The course provides an overview of the main economic theories from ancient times up to the present. It analyses in depth the contributions to economic analysis of the most representative economists.

- Preclassical Economics: Scholasticism; Mercantilism; Physiocracy;

- Classical Economic Thought: Adam Smith; J. B. Say; The Malthusian Population Doctrine; David Ricardo; J.S. Mill and the Decline of Classical Economics; Karl Marx and His Critique of Classical Economics;

- Neoclassical Economic Thought: Jevons, Menger; Walras and General Equilibrium Theory;

- The Transition to Neoclassical Economics; Marginal Productivity; Alfred Marshall; Vilfredo Pareto;

- J.M. Keynes.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures and exercises.

Assessment methods

Students attending the lectures are expected to take both a mid-term and a final written exam.

For the other students there will be a final written exam.
