Learning outcomes

Basic elements of descriptive statistics. Basic elements of probability and statistical inference.

Course contents

PART 1 - DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Frequency distributions and graphical tools. Measures of location dispersion and asymmetry. Bivariate descriptive analysis. Linear dependence: correlation and linear regression.

PART 2 - PROBABILITY

Events. Axioms of probability. Conditional probability. Independent events. Bayes theorem. Random variables and probability distributions. Uniform, Bernoulli, Binomial, Gaussian, t-Student, chi-square distributions. Independent random variables. Linear combination of random variables. Sum of variables. Central Limit Theorem.

PART 3 - STATISTICAL INFERENCE

Random sampling. Statistical models. Statistics and sampling distributions. Elements of point estimation. Confidence intervals for the mean, proportion, variance and difference between means. Hypothesis testing for the mean, proportion, variance and difference between means.

PARTE 4 - CASE STUDY

Case study analysis developed by group of students - results are illustrated and discussed in the class by means of oral presentations.
