Learning outcomes

The expected learning objectives are first and foremost a deeper attention to sustainable development issues and how the concept of sustainability can be expressed in the various contexts, in daily life and in work environments. The student will have to become aware of the strong interrelationships existing between different topics and learn to recognize their environmental, social and economic issues. It will be considered the existing connection between the concepts of environmental and economic sustainability and innovation, promoting responsible and attentive actions and behaviors.

Interdisciplinarity represents the main key word, as a necessary condition for developing adequate critical capacity on these issues. Through theoretical and multidisciplinary knowledge, students will develop their own skill in the identification of problems and related solutions and will be able, to analyse specific case studies and problems solving methods.

Course contents

History of the concept of sustainable development and an overview of the most significant characters and events.

The three main dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations Agenda 2030.

Focus on the main issues of environmental sustainability, problems and their possible solutions.

A sustainable economy: circular economy, industrial symbiosis.

Design thinking and lean startup methodologies, possible entrepreneurial approaches to sustainable development. Examples of social impact startups and sustainable startups.

Sustainability assessment and support tools.

The sustainable city.

Education for sustainability.

Teaching methods

The course is structured in oral classroom/remote lessons in which the subjects of the course program are presented. In addition, specific seminars and workshops will be provided where the professor will be joined by experts to promote more knowledge of the topics. Teaching laboratories will be organized according with a multidisciplinary approach in order to promote students' knowledge and engagement.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral interview to evaluate the critical and methodological skills acquired by the student, who will be invited to
present a specific subject. Particularly evaluated will be the student's ability to move within the cultural themes of the discipline. The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the subjects for their critical use, the demonstration of possessing an expressive and specific language will be valued with excellence marks.
