Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has the basic knowledge on design and functioning of artificial organs and biomedical devices used to treat patients with major organ dysfunctions. In particular, the student knows the entire development path for an artificial organ (clinical need, ideation, intellectual property strategies, regulatory requirements, experimental and clinical validations, design problems), current available technology solutions and future developments.

Course contents

Artificial organs for organ replacement.

Design and development of artificial organs: ideation, patenting, prototyping, experimental evaluation, clinical validation, regulatory aspetcs.

Biomaterials and tissue engineering.

Systems for transcutaneous energy transfer to active implantable devices.

Heart: heart-lung machine, heart valves, pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, ventricular assist devices, total artificial heart.

Eye: implantable visual prosthesis.

Ear: middle ear implants, cochlear implants, auditory brainstem implants.

Kidney: dialysis machine.

Liver: extracorporeal liver support systems.

Lung: artificial systems.

Pancreas: artificial systems.

Assessment methods

The exam includes an oral exam.

The exam aims to evaluate the student's theoretical knowledge. Analysis and synthesis skills, language properties and clarity of concepts and exposure are also evaluated.
