Learning outcomes

The laboratory based on the methodology of service learning offers an opportunity of experiential learning (learning) and active engagement (service) within the community and to work on a concrete problem identified in the context of a partnership between the university and community organizations / territorial services. At the end of the activity the student is able to understand problems in context and to reflect on what civic engagement is; he/she has experienced group work, has practiced his/her communication and relational skills and is able to document his/her civic engagement experience and discuss it critically.

Course contents

· Illustration of principles, concepts and methods of service learning: community engagement, service, experiential learning;

· Meeting with community organizations and illustration of the service learning opportunities available in the community;

· Service Learning, experience in the field. Getting familiar with the context, designing and contributing to the activities/intervention planned with the community organizations;

· Group and individual supervision and consultation;

· Public presentation of the experience to community organizations and community members.

Teaching methods

Three class meetings (introductory - beginning; supervising the experience - intermediate; public presentation of the experience to community partners and community members - final) and 20 hours of engagement/service in community partner organizations.

CALENDAR

The workshop will begin Friday, March 12 at 9-12, at the New Campus - Cesena.

Fieldwork will be agreed with the tutors of the partner community organization involved/hosting students.

Intermediate meetings will be agreed with the participants

The final meeting will be agreed with the participants and the tutors involved.

Assessment methods

The student must complete a reflective journal on the activity carried out. Students will be asked to fulfill a competence questionnaire before and after the course. The final exam includes the assignment of a grade. To pass the exam students have to obtain at least 18/30. Grade will be assigned as follows:

- up to 18/30 for the service performed (based on frequencies, commitment, active participation)

- up to 6/30 for the reflexive journal (higher score will be assigned to deeper reflection on the experience, on context analysis, and on consequences of the experience on learning)

- up to 3/30 for the final presentation to the community

- up to 3/30 for active participation involvement in the monitoring activities

- The honors (Lode) will be awarded if the student obtains the maximum in all the assigned tasks and distinguishes himself / herself for the reflexive ability
