88163 - ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS IN WATER AND COASTAL MANAGEMENT

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Moduli: Beatrice Maria Sole Giambastiani (Modulo 1) Andrea Valentini (Modulo 2) (Modulo 3)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2) Traditional lectures (Modulo 3)
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Environmental Assessment and Management (cod. 8418)

Learning outcomes

Thanks to this curriculum, student will become acquainted with the main aspects of Decision Support Systems (DSS) for water and coastal management. The student will learn and apply several advanced technologies and decision-support tools that aid in the evaluation and assessment of water and coastal systems and can be used to guide decision-making efforts from process to strategic level: GIS, remote sensing, geomatic tools, modelling, environmental and coastal monitoring tools, etc. The course includes several examples of field application.

Course contents

Advanced technologies: GPS, GPR, UAV. Introduction, application, data acquistion and elaboration.

GIS principles and applications

DSS in water and coastal risk management(along with several examples: oil spill, bathing water, coastal flooding, coastal erosion, marine/plastic litter)

Teaching methods

The teaching strategy will be based on lectures explaining the main principles of decision support systems in coastal areas. Students will be involved in the discussion of practical examples of simple decision support tools in water and coastal management, and in the application of several advanced technologies. Field campaigns will be organized in order to collect data, followed by data elaborations in class.

Assessment methods

3-4 page essay: given a national/ international directive with a direct impact on the local coastal system, identify the tools and stakeholders to allow the application and development of a decision-making process, highlighting the strengths / weaknesses / opportunities and threats.

and

2-4 page technical report on the field and laboratory activities.

Teaching tools

Power point slides, scientific papers
