87976 - LABORATORY OF NUCLEAR AND SUBNUCLEAR PHYSICS 2

Academic Year 2020/2021

  • Moduli: Gabriella Sartorelli (Modulo 1) Marco Selvi (Modulo 2) Marco Garbini (Modulo 3)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2) Traditional lectures (Modulo 3)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Physics (cod. 9245)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have a good knowledge of the detectors concepts to study events produced with colliders or fixed target experiments and will be familiar with the main techniques to identify particle charge and mass. Moreover, practice in the laboratory will allow the student to become familiar with some basic detectors, electronic instrumentation, DAQ system, data analysis and writing a report on the experimental work performed in the laboratory sessions.

Course contents

Second semester.

3 CFU (lectures)

-- The calorimeters: electromagnetics and hadronics. The showers. Energy measurement.

-- Techniques to measure position and time.

-- Techniques for particles identification.

-- Detectors systems for the experiments in Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics.

-- Rare events detection (neutrinos, Dark Matter, ...) in Astroparticle Physics: detection methods and description of some detectors (lectures given from DR. Marco Selvi).

1 CFU (problem solving)

-- Problems concerning particles detection and identification and detectors.

2 CFU (experimental activity in lab)

-- Laboratory practice. Setting-up of an apparatus to measure the cosmic muons mean lifetime. Data aquisition and data analysis. Written report of the measurement done. (Introduction to the experiment and most of the activity done with Dr. M. Garbini).

The laboratory practice is done in groups of 3 students at a time.

Usually also a tutor is available in the laboratory.

Readings/Bibliography

W.R. Leo, Techniques for Nuclear and Particle Physics Experiments, Springer-Verlag

K. Kleinknecht, Detectors for Particle Radiation, Cambridge University Press

G.F. Knoll, Radiation Detection and Measurement, J. Wiley & Sons

Slides from lectures of Dr. M. Negrini and Dr. M. Garbini.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, practice in laboratory, data analysis.

Assessment methods

Written reports are required:

  1. on the activity and experiment done in the lab (1 report/group).
  2. on a GEANT4 simulation problem given to each student (1 short report/student)

Oral examination on the topics dealt in the lectures.

Teaching tools

Lecture will be integrated with exercises and seminars on particular arguments. The laboratory practice will allow students to better understand and practice subjects developped in the lectures. A written report on the activity done in the lab will allow students to better and more deeply understand the experimental activity they have done. The GEANT4 simulation written report will allow the student to better understand and develop the given exercise.
