Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, successful students know Literature and Philology of modern and contemporary Italian texts, through the reading and analysis of exemplary case studies.

Course contents

Students must have passed at least one exam in Contemporary Italian Literature, in order to have a complete picture of the History of Italian Literature of the twentieth century. Students who didn’t ever took a course of Italian Philology, must study Pasquale Stoppelli handbook: Filologia della Letteratura Italiana, nuova edizione, Roma, Carocci, 2019, Capitoli 5, 6, 7, 8 e Questioni Q3, Q5.

Carlo Emilio Gadda’s texts have required a specific philological and critical study, both because of the difficulty of the language, but also because Gadda's relationship with his publishers has always been problematic, with important consequences for the structure and form of his texts. The course aims to highlight, through "Gadda case", some problems related to the philology of the twentieth century: from the author's last will to editing the structure and form of texts, and authorial and editorial projects. Gadda's way of working will then be examined in depth, and editorial and textual problems related to his work will be presented. Students will choose one of Gadda’s works, whose textual history will be examined in depth in a 25,000 characters written text (spaces included, Bibliography included), which will be the subject of a discussion during the oral exam.

Teaching methods

Face-to-face classes lessons, php, Php, all lessons will be recorded and uploaded in IOL.

Assessment methods

The exam is made up of a paper (maximum 25.000 bytes Bibliography included), sent by e-mail at least 15 days before the exam, in which students will deal with a topic of the course; and an oral discussion about the paper.

Reaching a clear view of all the course topics as well as using a correct language terminology will be valued with maximum rankings. Mnemonic knowledge of the course topics or not completely appropriate terminology will be valued with intermediate rankings. Unknown topics or inappropriate terminology use will be valued, depending on the seriousness of the omissions, with minimal or insufficient rankings.
