87549 - CRASH COURSE IN MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Law and Economics (cod. 9221)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have a good knowledge of basic concepts of vectors, matrices and statistical methods to conduct statistical analysis on real dataset. The course blends theory and practice for a better understanding of the subject.

Course contents

Mathematics:

Vectors: definitions, linear combinations, norm, inner product, orthogonality, linear independence, linear spaces.

Matrices: definitions, linear combinations, transpose, inverse, product, determinant.

Statistics:

Descriptive statistics and introduction to statistical distributions.

Location measures: mean, median, mode.

Graphical representation: frequency distribution, bar graph, histograms.

Scatter measures: the variance.

Two-way tables: joint, marginal and conditional distributions. Association: independence, chi-square statistic.

Concordance: covariance, correlation.
