Learning outcomes
The aims of the course are to provide the knowledge, the methods and the tools useful for the correct design and verification of the mechanical powertrain components, such as, the gear transmissions, the belt transmissions, the power connection elements and their materials. At the end of the course the students will be able, for example, to select the most appropriate type of mechanical connections or transmission system

The scheduling of the design phases:
The simultaneous and concurrent design: time costs and quality of the product design
The QFD (Quality Function Deployment) method
Introduction to mechanical design: design set up, design develop and design manage.
Belt connections.
The rotating disk theory.
The shaft hub couplings: drive fit, taper fit, tongue fit and spline hole/shaft.
Gears connections and design.
Fundamentals of the reliability of mechanical components.

The course includes theoretical and practical lectures given with the aid of multimedia systems. The didactic material will be uploaded at the end of the course on the platform “DOLLY”(http://dolly.ingmo.unimore.it/2017/)
Assessment methods
The exam consists in a written and in an oral test. The written part consists in the solution of three exercises in which, both the conceptual and the numerical results, will be evaluated. The oral part consists in a discussion about the written part and about the theoretical arguments dealt during the lectures.
Teaching tools
The student acquires basic and advanced knowledge on the design and sizing of machine parts and their components dedicated to powertrain transmission
