Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with a general knowledge of 1) the individual employment relationship regulation in Italy and 2) principles of Italian social security law. At the end of the course students are able to: (a) understand the principal obligations of the employment relationship and use the main legal instruments related to the management of employment relationships; (b) understand the main issues related to the management of social security rights of the employee as well as to the main obligations of the employer as regards contributions to the welfare system.

Course contents

  1. The binary divide between employment and self-employment.
  2. The labour market regulation
  3. The employer's powers and the contents of the employment contract: tasks and jus variandi; controls by technological devices and controls for health reasons.
  4. Disciplinary procedures and sanctions in workplace; grievances. Dismissals
  5. Transfer of undertakings, outsourcing and labour law.
  6. Social security in Italy
  7. The social security system
  8. Pension schemes in Italy
  9. Pay and pension funds.
  10. Workplace health and safety; accidents, injuries and diseases: responsibilities and rights in employment law and in the social security system.

For attending students, the examination can be prepared on the teaching material provided on the dedicated website and on the notes taken in class.

Teaching methods

The Course is organized in 10 lesson. The material used in class (slides, readings, etc.) will be available in advance.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral examination designed to assess the knowledge acquired by the student and his ability to critical reconstruction of the matter also through the use of an appropriate legal language.
