Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the movements and problems of the Italian Theatrical Literature. The student can be learn the ability to analyze texts in relation to forms and dialog functions and stage. The course program includes the relationship between literary text, dramatic text and its staging, with particular attention to the extra-textual elements (scenography, music) contained in the modern dramatic text.

First Part (Module I, 6 cfu)

Eduardian Drama. The Theater that must go on «as long as there is a blade of grass on the Earth»

After some introductory lessons on pre-Eduardian theatrical poetry, will be analyzed the dramaturgical texts in relation to the historical-literary scenery of their origin.

This first part provides the textual and thematic analysis of Il berretto a sonagli, Natale in casa Cupiello, Napoli milionaria, Le voci di dentro e Sabato, domenica e lunedì of Eduardo De Filippo [recommended editions or Meridiani Mondadori or Einaudi. For the study of the theatrical text Il berretto a sonagli, cfr. Pirandello, Maschere nude, ed. by A. D'Amico - G. Macchia, Milano, Mondadori, 2007 (1986), vol. I].

DVDs will be used for some texts from the sillabus.

Non-attendees students are also required to read one of following theatrical texts:

Second Part (Module II, 6 cfu)

For a Theater in music. From the maestro Roberto De Simone to the follower Annibale Ruccello

This second part provides the textual and thematic analysis of La gatta Cenerentola. Favola in musica in tre atti of Roberto De Simone and Ferdinando of Annibale Ruccello, and also the study of a dramaturgical text to choose between L'arte della commedia of Eduardo De Filippo or L’opera buffa del giovedì santo. Commedia per musica in tre atti e quattro quadri of Roberto De Simone.

• Students enrolled Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in in Music Disciplines (code 0967) can prepare a part chosen between Module I and Module II of the program, both with a value of 6 credits.

• Students enrolled at the Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in Italian Studies, European Literary Cultures, Linguistics (cod. 9220) are instead required to prepare both Module I and Module II of the program (12 cfu).

• Non-attending students enrolled at the Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in Italian Studies, European Literary Cultures, Linguistics will have to prepare both a chosen text present in the Module I program and a chosen text present in the Module II program.

Assessment methods

Oral exam: consists of a talk lasting about 30 minutes on the contents of the program.

Assessment methods: the quality of the oral expression, the capacity for critical reflection, the knowledge of the contents of the program and of the methods of literary criticism.

The highest evaluation will be given to students who will be able to have a clear picture of the works and themes present in the program and developed during the course, using appropriate terminology.
An intermediate evaluation will be given to those students who will demonstrate that they have learned the contents of the course mnemonically.
A poor evaluation will be given to those students who will show they do not know the topics of the course and literary criticism.
