Provide basic support for first-line nursing care.
Course contents
Registered Nurse (RN) role and collaboration with Medical Doctor (MD)
Knowledge:
- nurse’s role and responsibilities
- nurse-physician collaboration and patient safety
Basic communication skills in nursing practice
Knowledge of:
- the core communication skills required in healthcare settings (empathy, active listening, negotiation…)
- the role of effective communication in the provision of patient-centered care
- barriers to effective communication.
Pressure ulcers (PUs) prevention and treatment
Knowledge of:
- PUs risk factors
- preventive PUs care/PUs prevention strategies
- PUs staging
- PUs treatment: i) wound bed preparation (wound irrigation and, when necessary, chemical or surgical debridement), ii) key attributes of a PU dressing, iii) types of dressings: basic wound dressings, advanced wound dressings, anti-microbial dressings and specialist dressings
- collection of a specimen for culture and sensitivity (C&S) of a wound
Perform a PU dressing while maintaining patient’s safety and comfort.
Pain assessment
Knowledge of:
- different types of pain (acute, chronic, breakthrough pain, nociceptive, neuropathic pain…)
- variables that affect the pain experience
- various types of Pain Assessment Tools (unidimensional and multidimensional tools)
- how to perform a correct pain assessment and re-assessment for each age group.
Correctly perform a Peripheral Venous Catheter (PVC) insertion and removal
Basic intravenous therapy
Identification of an appropriate intravenous (IV) site
Identification of the appropriate size of the cannula
Maintain aseptic technique
Perform skin cleansing
Apply sterile dressing
Knowledge of:
- how to maintain intravenous infusions correctly, with comfort and safety
- signs and symptoms of phlebitis (VIPS scale) versus infiltration.
Correctly perform Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs) dressing
Assess CVAD insertion site (for inflammation, redness, etc.) through old dressing
Remove old dressing
Maintain aseptic technique
Perform skin cleansing
Reapply sterile dressing
Correctly perform a sterile collection of blood samples for aerobic and anaerobic culture
Knowledge of the equipment needed for the procedure
Maintain aseptic technique
Demonstrate the proper technique to perform a sterile collection of blood samples for aerobic and anaerobic culture.
Isolation technique
Knowledge of various types of isolation and rationale for them
Knowledge of various procedures necessary for patient isolation

Antiseptics
Knowledge of:
- type of antiseptics (Alcohol, Quaternary ammonium compound, Chlorhexidine and other diguanide, Antibacterial dye, Peroxide and permanganate, Halogenated phenol derivative, Quinolone derivative, Miscellaneous)
- what to consider when choosing an antiseptic
- use of an antiseptic
- effective and safe of antiseptics.
