Learning outcomes

Provide basic life support (BLS) for the management of a number of emergency conditions, such as cardiac arrest, choking, and drowning.

Course contents

The aim of the Basic Life Support (BLS) provider course is to enable each candidate to gain competency in both delivery of BLS and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

BLS provides the baseline knowledge and expertise of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Competence in BLS is a prerequisite for enrolment to all advanced-level trainings provided by the Italian Resuscitation Council and European Resuscitation Council.

This learning activity is delivered in partnership with IRC - Italian Resuscitation Council with the Scientific Supervision of Giuseppe Ristagno, Andrea Scapigliati, and Federico Semeraro.

Topics:

1) Cardiac arrest

2) Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

3) Foreign body airways obstruction

4) Choking

5) Defibrillation

Teaching methods

BLS and, whenever possible, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is the first level of care for a person in cardiac arrest. Learning to perform BLS and AED use is an interactive process requiring both knowledge and practical skills. Part or all of this knowledge and some skills will be obtained by self-instruction and on-line learning.

Teaching modes include: Traditional lectures, E-learning BLS, Workshop and Simulation Scenario.

Assessment methods

During the learning activity, students will be tested with both a multiple choice test and a practical skill test about the topics covered in the 'Course contents' section.

On the last day of the learning activity, after about two months from the previous tests, students will undergo a second practical skill test.

Upon completion of the course and after passing all tests, students will receive the following certifications:

- Italian Resuscitation Council BLS-D provider certification for Italy (2 years validity);

- European Resuscitation Council BLS provider certification for Europe (3 years validity).
