Learning outcomes

This course introduces students to English for business. By the end of the course students are able to: (a) understand the main ideas of different types of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in the field of economics and management, acquiring a broad active reading vocabulary; (b) interact with a good degree of fluency and spontaneity, highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences, sustaining views by providing relevant explanations and arguments; (c) use the language effectively and communicate with good grammatical control produce clear texts on a wide range of subjects, and particularly in the area of economics, finance and management; (d) expand vocabulary range and accuracy to communicate effectively on common, concrete and business-related topics.

Business emailing and phone calls; Language for business meetings; Customer service; Competition; negotiating a deal; advertising and promotion; networking; innovation and product development; statistics and trends; discussing corporate trends; financial statements; small talk; problem solving; presentations. Company profiles

Readings/Bibliography

No specific textbook will be used. Material coming from the real world, such as company profiles and presentations, articles from economic and financial newspapers and magazines, marketing material, company performance analyses, etc.

Teaching methods

Interactive, student-focused teaching methods: students should actively participate in communication tasks, such as role-plays, brainstorming, case studies, simulations. There will be a combination of grammar with Business topics for students to boost their communication skills.

Ongoing assessment and final exam (written multiple-choice test on the topics and materials used in class and available on virtuale)
