  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies (cod. 9235)

Learning outcomes

Knowledge gain on challenges, constrains and benefits from developing bioenergy and biorefinery agro-systems at national and international levels. Examples of projects and applications of bioenergy and biorefineries with particular focus on biomass crops and environmental impacts.

Course contents

Frontal lessons (36 h): Introduction, definitions and perspectives of bioenergy and biorefinery, including advanced biofuels, with particular emphasis on agro-energy and food systems integration. Main dedicated crops for biofuels, biogas, CHP and for emerging biorerifery industries. Introduction to Life Cycle Thinking and Assessment – LCA, to assess the environmental impacts of agro-energy systems and biorefineries in the perspective of a development of bioenergies in 2030 and 2050 (Farm-to Fork, Repower EU, Green Deal and other EU programmes). Opportunities for bioenergy from marginal and abandoned land, including contaminated land (and phytoremediation).

Knowledge gain: Innovation, challenges and opportunities from developing bioenergy and biorefinery value chains. Biomass and oil crops. Life Cycle Assessment for the evaluation of environmental assessment tools.

Practical activities (24 h): interactive discussions and visits to bioenergy and biorefinery plants, and to the experimental farm of UNIBO to see real stands of common biomass crops.
