Learning outcomes
The student - knows the core features (contents, methods and instruments) necessary for the in-depth analysis of Spanish culture and literature - is able to apply this knowledge when tackling a range of semiotically challenging texts - is able to acquire higher-level cultural and literary knowledge and competences independently, and to apply them to a wide range of novel texts
Course contents
The aim of the course is to present some fundamental aspects of Spanish literary history from its origins to the seventeenth century and to contribute to the knowledge of the major movements and literary genres in the historical and linguistic context of the time.
In particular, the following topics will be discussed:
1. The birth of the Castilian literary language and the role of Alfonso X.
2. The Middle Ages and the Renaissance: La Celestina.
3. Narrative in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with particular reference to Lazarillo.
4. Cervantes and Don Quixote.
