81880 - Structure – Science of Construction

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Docente: Luca Patruno
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: ICAR/08
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Advanced Design (cod. 9256)

Learning outcomes

The course aims to give to the students the concept of structure as an object capable of transmitting loads. At the end of the course the student is able to: (1) know and work with one-dimensional and two-dimensional structural models; (2) develop calculation codes and elementary verification; (3) use existing computer codes to get to approximate solutions of models introduced.

Course contents

- Stress flow;

- Ractions for statically determinate structures;

- Internal actions;

- Equilibrium equations;

- Truss structures;

- Arches and cables;

- Stresses and strains;

- Beam bending and corresponding stress state;

- Eccentric loads;

- Shear;

- Stress state;

- Statically indeterminate structures.

The following figure depicts the strong relations existing between the stress flow inside a beam, truss structures and structural optimization. At the end of the course the student is able to fully appreciate such relationships and use them in order to conceive structural systems.
