POPULAR MUSIC AND CULTURE IN ITALY

This course aims to describe the relationship between popular culture and musical culture in Italy both in its historical and thematic evolution. It will identify the main centres of the Italian musical production and it will describe from the point of view of both anthropology and sociology the reception of the musical discourse in its controversial relationship between "high culture” and a culture that is “other”. In this sense, the course will investigate the concepts of "tradition", "innovation", "horizon of waiting " and the meaning that all these concepts have in the production, diffusion and consumption of music and also within the perspective of both the mass media and the world music.
