Learning outcomes

Cultural history of ancient and late antique Iran (philology, linguistic, literature, history, religion, institutions) before the rise of Islam. Presentations of texts and commentaries (Iranian texts and inscriptions, Classical sources, Islamic sources). The course shows a survey of Iranian and Central Asian cultural history by the means of their literary heritage. The final outcome is a better understanding of a geo-political and cultural zone, in its past and present, giving to student a knowledge of its cultural processes and developments, and providing a dialogue between East and West to avoid the risk of prejudices.

Course contents

From Gaumata to Kirdir: the Magi, the "magic", wisdom and power from Achaemenid Iran to Sassanian Iran

The course of 60 hours is divided in two parts dedicated to problems and aspects of religious history of Pre-Islamic Iran, and will deal with the priestly typology of the Magi. The basic bibliography and the documents of teaching (uploaded) will be examined during the lessons. The two parts of the course are composed as follows:

1) The figure of Zarathustra and the emerging of the Zoroastrian religion, between Indo-Iranian heritage and new synthesis. The function of the sacrifice and the role of the Magi's priesthood within the Persian Achaemenid empire, between wisdom and power. Seminar 1: The Persian "magic" in the Greex Texts: Heraclitus, the Papyrus of Derveni, Aeschylus and Herodotus.

2) Iran after Alexander the Great, in Seleucid, Arsacid and Sassanian period: the Iranian Hellenism, the prophecies, the longing for a savior, the speculations on time, the cosmos and the end of the world. The Magi as custodian of traditions, holy texts and religious mysteries. Seminar 2: the Magi in Arrianus, Curtio Rufus, Strabo, Diogenes Laertius, Lucianus: masters of the otherworldly journeys.

Assessment methods

The exam consists in an oral interview. During the interview the methodological and critical skills acquired by the student will be evaluated and the student will be invited to discuss the texts covered during the course and to move within the sources and bibliographical material in order to be able to identify in them the useful information that will enable to illustrate the cultural aspects of the discipline. The achievement of an organic vision of the issues addressed during the classes and their critical use, which demonstrate ownership of a mastery of expression and specific language, will be assessed with marks of excellence. Mechanical and/or mnemonical knowledge of matter, synthesis and analysis of non-articulating and/or correct language but not always appropriate will lead to discrete assessments. Training gaps and/or inappropriate language - although in a context of minimal knowledge of the material - will lead to votes that will not exceed the sufficiency. Training gaps, inappropriate language, lack of guidance within the reference materials offered during the course wil lead to failed assessments.
