75686 - History of Consumption and Tourism Firms

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide student with an understanding of the long-run evolution of the different forms of touristic enterprises and touristic consumptions.

In particular, the course is focused in the analysis of touristic patterns in different historical period, over the last three centuries.

Course contents

The course is organized in two parts. The first one analyses the evolution of tourism products, promotion and accomodation in a comparative perspective. The second one follows a geographic perspective focusing on the history of tourism in different continents and in Italy.

Prof. Patrizia Battilani is the teacher of the first part, that deals with the following arguments:

• The industrial revolution and the new types of enterprise
• The consumption revolution
• Elitist tourism: structures and consumption
• Elitist tourism: places and approaches
• Mass tourism: structures and consumption
• Mass tourism: places an approaches
• Some outputs of post-modern tourism: culture, congresses, food
• The Un Sustainable Development Goals in the tourist sector
• The European cultural Routes: the case study of the Phoenicians' Route

 

Dott. Tito Menzani is the teacher of the second part, that deal with the following arguments:

• Tourism in the world: Europe and United States
• Tourism in the world: Asia and Africa
• Evolution and transformation of Italian economy in XIX and XX centuries
• Proto-tourism in Italy
• Elitist tourism in Italy
• Mass tourism in Italy
• Post-modern tourism in Italy
• Tourism promotion: districts, enterprises, tour operators
• Religious tourism

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons: 60 hours and 8 cf.

In consideration of the type of activity and the teaching methods, the attendance of this course requires the prior participation of all students in the following online training modules: Moduli 1 e 2 di formazione sulla sicurezza nei luoghi di studio, [https://elearning-sicurezza.unibo.it/].

Assessment methods

Exams will be held online according to the following format:

24 multiple choice (half point each; only one right answer, no penalties for wrong answers) and 4 essay questions (max 5 points each)

The exam will be based on assigned readings you can find in the previous box and the power point presentations.

In case online exams will be envisaged by the University of Bologna, the structure of the written exam is the same. The exam will be run through Zoom and Exams Online (EOL). Detailed instructions on how to manage and hand in the online exam are available on the course page on the VIRTUALE platform.

The maximum possible score is 30 cum laude, in case all anwers are correct, complete and formally rigorous.

The grade is graduated as follows:

<18 failed
18-23 sufficient
24-27 good
28-30 very good
30 e lode excellent
