Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired the concept of evolution of construction techniques and knows how to contextualize the functional and figurative outcomes with respect to the socio-economic and technical conditions within which the architectural structure was produced. In particular, at the end of the course the student is able to conduct the analysis of an artefact of historical building, to document it and to return it in critical form.

Course contents

Basic articulation
The course of "History of Architectural Techniques and Processes" is divided into a double and synergistic program, both educational and documental research.
The "didactic" program - with the contribution of the selected manual and with the help of special monographic lessons - is intended to bring to light the close interaction between the historical development of the techniques (materials and technologies) constructive and the unfolding of the "story" historical "of the architectural discipline.
The total number of hours of the lectures will be divided as follows:
i) hours of "monographic" lessons (commented on by a specific visual repertoire), intended to illustrate the close relationship between the history of architecture and the historical development of the relative building techniques. The lectures, therefore, will be destined exclusively to this targeted educational offer, leaving the task, to each individual student, to deal independently (under the supervision and guidance of the teacher) with the compulsory manual identified by the program.
ii) hours dedicated to the identification and development, shared among all the students of the course, of the monographic papers that each individual candidate will have to elaborate to take the exam.

Operational articulation
The individual papers, which will form an integral part of the discussion in the final oral examination, are identified as follows:
a) A double compilation of the identification questionnaire – “in” and “out” - on the basis of the document inserted between the "Didactic material".
b) Elaboration of a "review" of the Reference Manual: a text of 4,500-6,000 characters, including spaces, which briefly illustrate the work of study produced and a series of personal evaluations on the contents of the same text.
c) Elaboration of a "monographic essay", in presentation slides ("ppt"), on a topic agreed upon with the teacher (between the "Didactic material", an evaluation and information sheet). Every single research topic, included in the didactic program, will have to present precise characters of originality, both in the bibliographic and documental development, and in the interpretative results achieved. The required documents must be received in good time before the examination, before the exam, to allow their correct and exhaustive scientific evaluation

Readings/Bibliography

The following text is the compulsory course manual, and the subject of the theoretical section of the exam: Nuttgens, Patrick, "History of Architecture", Milan, Bruno Mondadori 2001.

Assessment methods

The examination, exclusively personal, will be the evaluation of the four different products produced. In particular, the student will be able to: i) perform an adequate bibliographic research; ii) to critically structure a course of historical studies; iii) to historically recognize the main architectural languages, bringing them back to the relative building systems; iv) describe and comment, in a verbal and written form, an architecture belonging to the historical period in question..

Teaching tools

Besides the information repertoire provided in the course program, the lessons will be dedicated to: i) a thorough presentation of the course's articulation and objectives; ii) the illustration of the fundamental "investigative tools" of the discipline, theoretical and practical; iii) the shared optimization of diagnostic tools for a monographic survey program, on the history of architectural works and related building techniques.
