  • Docente: Claudio Galli
  • Credits: 12
  • SSD: ICAR/19
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture and Building Engineering (cod. 0940)

Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at providing the necessary knowledge to operate with historical-technical competence in the field of protection and recovery of the existing architectural heritage, also on the basis of the study of the historical evolution of restore theories. The project of restoration of a building heritage is developed in the practical laboratory.

Course contents

The aim of the course is to provide the conceptual tools useful to elaborate the architectural restoration design, interpreted as a moment of dialogue and interdisciplinary synthesis, in which historical-critical judgment and technical-scientific skills converge. This objective is pursued by providing a general overview of the history of restoration and a theoretical reference point for the discipline; illustrating and educating to the comprehension of architectural, technical, constructive and cultural specificities of the buildings; outlining the essential tools for a correct planning and operational approach on historical buildings (survey techniques, historical and constructive survey, chronological reading, reading and diagnosis of decay and instability phenomena, methods of conservative intervention, outline of regulations).

Teaching methods

The teaching is divided in frontal lessons, practical exercises, laboratories and punctual periodic checks.

Topics of the lessons

1. General problems: definitions, basic terminology, fields of application, purpose of restoration (as a cultural act for the preservation of the historical-artistic values of the building and to facilitate reading), protection and enhancement.

2. Overview of the theoretical and historical foundations of the restoration. Current conceptual and methodological developments.

3. Relationship between restoration and specialized disciplines connected to it.

4. The statics of restoration: the wall decay, cracking system and diagnosis, technical choices and historical respect of the monument. Criteria and methodologies for the restoration of buildings affected by earthquake: specific and typical vulnerabilities, first and second damage mechanisms, intervention techniques for seismic improvement.

5. Construction characteristics of historic buildings: traditional materials, wall patterns, wooden structures, plants, finishes, etc.

6. Decay of structures and materials: causes and processes; intervention techniques.

7. Modern materials and restoration.

8. The conservation program; the architectural restoration project: enhancement and conservation, reuse and conservation, regulatory adaptation and conservation.

9. Overview of regulations for the restoration of cultural heritage; legislation and restoration papers.

Exercises and Laboratory

During the exercises are provided the technical tools necessary for the development of the project, which will be useful with during the Design Workshop. In particular, will be addressed the themes of knowledge of the monument aimed at restoration, relief, in the double aspect of detection and graphic restitution, the thematic investigations to define both historical evolution and architectural aspects (study of geometry and dimensions, modular study and proportional, metrological, investigation of the masonry apparatus, comparative analysis, constructive and stratigraphic investigations of the decay) and of the restoration project declined in its conservative instance.

During the laboratory, that has an exquisitely technical-operative function, the students will be supported by experts to the processing and verification of conservation project.
