  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 8896)

Learning outcomes

THE COURSE IS NOT AVAILABLE TO EXCHANGE STUDENTS

The course has the objective to provide to students theoretical and practical notions on the design of chemical processes and plants. The course will also provide practical skills on design in a real industrial framework.

Course contents

Skills required to access the course and to attend it with success

The lectures, the group discussions and the material provided are only in Italian. Fluent/native speaking and advanced understanding of Italian language are required. No exceptions are possible.

The course begins in first semester and ends at the end of second semester.

Deep knowledge of thermodynamics of multiphase systems, of liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid equilibria of multicomponent systems, fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, unit operations, process design, design of chemical equipment, ability to read P&IDs and PFDs are required.

Course Contents

Features of a Chemical Production Site.

Company organization. Utilities. Control Systems. Safety Systems.

On-site process and equipment design. Design steps. Design improvement. Debottlenecking.

Teaching methods

Lectures by professionals in engineering services of chemical companies.

A context specific design project is assigned and students in groups are required to fullfil the assignment with the support of the engineering services of a main chemical company.

Assessment methods

Discussion of the design project with site managers of the company responsible for the assignment.
