73190 - Technologies For Environmental Protection M

Academic Year 2019/2020

Learning outcomes

The course is intended to give the knowledge for the design, for the operation and for the management of some typical processes of environmental protection with respect to gaseous emissions, liquid and solid wastes.

Course contents

While formal training is not requested, the student should know the basic elements of general chemistry and organic chemistry, material balance, chemical kinetics, fluid motion in hydraulic circuits, and psychrometry.

All lessons will be held in Italian. It is therefore necessary to understand the Italian language to take advantage of the course and to use the given teaching material.

The course program describes the processes and technologies for the environmental protection, with specific reference to gaseous, liquid and solid pollutants. More specifically:

(a) Waste disposal

Introductory elements on the design of recycling and waste incineration plants.

(b) Water pollution

The characteristics of civil and industrial waste water. Joint operations for the treatment of waste water: preliminary treatments; sedimentation; aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment; nitrogen abatement (nitrification / denitrification) and phosphorus.

c) Atmospheric pollution

Classification of pollutants in gaseous streams. Gaseous pollutants. Technological measures for the control of gaseous pollutants, with particular reference to absorption. Particulate matter. Technologies for controlling particulate matter emissions (cyclones, fabric filters, ESP).

Teaching methods

Classroom lessons with projection of slides, including exercises on the dimensioning and testing of plants for the treatment of polluting effluents.

Assessment methods

The student must demonstrate a basic knowledge of the principles of operation and design criteria and verification of the main equipment for the treatment of wastewater, solid waste and atmospheric emissions.

The exam consists of a written test related to the treatment of atmospheric emissions and waste disposal (module 1), and to to the treatment of waste water (module 2).

Each written test will include a problem of design or verification of one or more apparatuses for the treatment of liquid or gaseous effluents, and a theoretical question related to the course program.

The exams related to the two modules can be taken separately.

There is no minimum temporal distance between the exam in which a module is sustained and the one related to the other module.

For the examination of the exam, it is necessary to have obtained a grade of at least 18 in both modules

If a score greater than or equal to 18 is obtained in a module, it is not possible to repeat the test related to this form, if not after having passed the test on the other form.

Teaching tools

Classroom lessons with projection of slides, including exercises on the dimensioning and testing of plants for the treatment of polluting effluents.
