73096 - Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Docente: Enrico Corti
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: ING-IND/08
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Mechanical Engineering (cod. 0949)

Learning outcomes

Students will learn the basics of engine testing, in terms of testing objectives, instrumentation and components (brake/motor, auxiliary systems).

Course contents

Engine testing: objectives, measurements.

Test bench instrumentation.

Test bench components.

Engine testing.

Data analysis.

Readings/Bibliography

Engine testing : the design, building, modification and use of powertrain test facilities, Michael Plint and Anthony Martyr, Butterworth Heinemann, Oxford 2012.

Powertrain instrumentation and test systems : development - hybridization - electrification / Michael Paulweber, Klaus Lebert
Wiesbaden : Springer, 2015

Teaching methods

Three different teaching tools:

  • Lectures (power point presentations available to the student through the data exchange platform)
  • Engine testing (visit to the test bench lab, with an on-site description of instrumentations, machines, software and hardware, and a test session on an engine)
  • Data analysis (detailed description of data and matlab procedures for data analysis)

Assessment methods

Oral examination (typically it takes half on hour). The student will be asked to show schematics/equations concerning the topics of the program. As regards the Matlab data analysis scripts, the students should know how to manage the data and the commands contained in the scripts.  Questions will concern the following subjects:

- test cell plant structure: transducers and machinery layouts

- engine testing methodologies: test procedures

- detailed analysis of one of the shared scripts for data analysis

The exam rating is a mere pass/no pass.

The exam dates are communicated in advance through the AlmaEsami web platform of the University of Bologna. It is possible to enroll to the exam from 7 to 2 days before the exam date. At the time of the exam the student must show an identification document.

Teaching tools

PowerPoint presentation, Matlab data and scripts. All the teaching material is available on the data exchange platform. The students will be able to access only after enrolling in the distribution list.
