  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Geological Sciences (cod. 8015)

Learning outcomes

The course provides the basic concepts to carry out the geological maps and geological profiles. The student will be able to use maps and compass, to study the outcropping rocks, to draw stratigraphic boundaries and tectonic structures on the map, to prepare a legend and a simple geological report, to recognize the stratigraphic succession and reconstruct the geological history of the study area.

Course contents

The field geology is the ground of geological research. Aim, techniques and equipments. The meaning of the geological maps and symbols represented within: points, lines, areas, stratigraphic and tectonic schemes.
The beds, boundary of the stratigraphic units and fault planes in the map: how we can to plot and to reconstruct from the map. Structures hierarchy and cronology. Drawing and interpretation of different geological profiles to explain several geological situations. The 10 days field trip is compulsory and represent the main activity of  field geology, where the student realize an original geological map, a geological profile with a legend and a report. The evaluation consist in oral and written examination.
