Learning outcomes

An integrated approach to management of dyslipidemias, diabetes and hypertension. Drugs used in the treatment of metabolic diseases: Wilson's disease, Gaucher's disease, carnitine's deficiency, porphyrias.

Pharmacotherapy of nutritional diseases: drigs used for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, treatment of obesity. Antiaging drugs: hormonal therapies, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins. Critical revision of “antiaging” therapies. Palliative strategies for dementias, for macula degeneration and for cataract.

Course contents

Integrated pharmacological approaches for dyslipidaemias, diabetes and hypertension. Drugs used in metabolic diseases: Wilson disease, Gaucher disease, carnitine deficiency, porphyria. Role of lipoic acid.

Pharmacotherapy of eating disorders: drugs used to treat anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, drugs to treat obesity. Therapeutic approaches to metabolic syndrome.

Drugs used to slow down aging: hormonal therapies, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins. Role of vitamins to modulate immune system response.

Critical review of "anti-aging" therapies. Palliative therapies for dementia, macula degeneration and cataract.

Lessons with educational material available for students on online teaching of the University of Bologna.

Assessment methods

Verification of learning takes place with an oral test. The test consists of questions on the following topics: integrated pharmacological approaches for dyslipidaemias, diabetes and hypertension. Drugs used in metabolic diseases: Wilson disease, Gaucher disease, carnitine deficiency, porphyria. Role of lipoic acid. Pharmacotherapy of eating disorders: drugs used to treat anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, drugs to treat obesity. Drugs used to slow down aging: hormonal therapies, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins. Role of vitamins in influencing the immune response.Critical review of "anti-aging" therapies. Palliative therapies for dementia, macula degeneration and cataract.
The oral test will be assigned a grade out of thirty. The test will be passed if a minimum score of 18/30 has been reached.

Teaching tools

Video projector - PC system - connection to specific websites. The slides presented in class are made available to the students in electronic format on the online teaching site. For access, username and password are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Bologna.
