Course contents

Following the survey in the previous courses, the 2018-2019 academic year will be devoted to the reading of the 'system' complex that governs the world of contemporary art.

A system in which the socio-cultural and economic value of contemporary artwork seem to blend, risking to shadow the aesthetic function that had characterized artistic production in previous centuries, even though today hardly the work of art has been able to distance itself from what constitutes the legitimacy of its artistic value and therefore of its existence: the market.

The term 'art system' has now entered into current use in the international landscape of contemporary art, and although the emergence of such a definition dating back to the early 1970s, the birth of the market of art has far roots.

Today, much has changed at all levels and, at the beginning of the third millennium, the configuration of this 'system' has profoundly changed, both for the changed socio-economic situation in the world and for a globalization that has come into bullying into the 'system '. Actors who have never been considered, like the Asian countries and, in general, the emerging countries, who have necessarily shifted the axis of the system from western to global.

During the lessons the different aspects of the evolution of the art system and the roles, both historical and present, of the protagonists of the system itself: artists, critics, collectors, museums, galleries, fairs, also through video footage and meetings with artists and critics.

At the end of the lessons, students will be provided with a collection of texts and notes related to the topics discussed during the lessons as well as bibliography supplementations.
