Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students should know the psalm-poems of the 20^th century. Morevoer, they should be able to understand and contextualize a text in German language.

Course contents

The other tradition: Cultural Heritage in the German Psalm-Poems of the 20^th century

The course deals with poems of the 20^th century in German language which refer to the biblical cultural heritage of the psalms. We’re analysing poems by Georg Trakl, Nelly Sachs, Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann.

The course is held in German language.

The students have to present an oral presentation.

Non-attending students: They have to write a paper instead of to present a presentation. For other information see the assessment methods.

The selection of the poems will be given by the lecturer.

Moreover, it is recommended to read these books:

- Walter Hinderer (Hrsg.), Geschichte der deutschen Lyrik. Vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart, Würzburg, K&N, 2010 (just the part on the XXth century).

- Anna Chiarloni (Hrsg.), La poesia tedesca del novecento, Bari, Laterza, 2009.

- Dieter Burdorf, Einführung in die Gedichtanalyse, Stuttgart/Weimar, Metzler, 1995 (or other edition).

Lectures and seminars

Assessment methods

Attending Students will be required to present a paper.

Non attending students have to write a paper.

The oral exam consists of 3 questions; the first question is based on the paper prepared during the course.

Attending and non-attending students learn 3 poems by Paul Celan, 3 poems by Nelly Sachs, the poems by Georg Trakl and Psalm by Ingeborg Bachmann.

Teaching tools

Powerpoint, videos, the contribution of experts on the subject will be used.
