Course contents

I section (6 cfu - 30 hrs)

The representation of Jesusin contemporary culture: cinema, art, historiography

Aim of the course is to analyze representations of Jesus in films, historiography and fiction starting from the nineteenth century, in order to offer a wide analysis of the relationship between media and religion, in parallel to the dissemination of historical portrays of Jesus. The course aims to explore how modern culture portrayed the life of Jesus, who was destined to became not just a religious icon but a modern myth.

Students will analyze the following films, and will be introduced to earlier films and theatre plays such as La Vie et la passion de Jesus Christ (1903, Melies), The king of the kings (De Mille, 1927), Il processo a Gesù (D. Fabbri, 1955.

Assessment methods

Students who attend regularly must write a paper of 20/30 pages on topics analyzed and discussed during classes.
