Learning outcomes
The course proposes to form for the students an adeguate knowledge of the base of the principle facts and crucial questions of European art from the second half of the 18th century to the current art trends. In particular the ability to recognize essential technical methods that would allow the student to understand the works of art from the point of view of the style, the iconography, technique and to comprehend the links to the historical, social and cultural timeframe in which they were produced. At the end of the course students should be familiar with the characteristic themes and particularities along with the ambitions of the artists of these centuries. The students should also recognize and be able to comment on the works of the most representative artists and movements.
Course contents
The course contest is organized in two didactic sections, both of theoretical character: the first one on meant and the function of the archaeology beginning from the ancient world and the conquest of the method; the second on the theoretical and interpretative developments, been born within the prehistoric archaeology, today wide to the different sectors of the discipline, and on the new fields of interest.
- Meaning of Archaeology: connection Present/Past
- The awareness of the Past: since archetype to "antiquaria" from the naissance of the modern archaeology
- The "different archaeologies"and the "archaeologies differents": the studies between the XX and XXI century
- The methodology of the seventy years: the construction of the an archaeological science
- The present situation: Archaeology and Cultural Heritage policies. Society in comparision of the Cultural Heritage
- The archaeology meaning and impact in the contemporary culture: media exploitation and cultural tourism
- Wich future for archaeology? New laws, provisions and rules in field archaeology; the professional training of the archaeologist and his role in contemporary society

The course for students of the first degree who have no previous experience, it can be integrated in advance by reading the manual: D. Manacorda, Prima lezione di archeologia, Roma 2006 (available at the Library of the Archaeology Section DiSCi)
Attending students are required to prepare one manual to be chosen from those indicated in the section "Introduction texts", and another text chosen on a specific topic.
Non-attending students must agree on the program with the teacher and supplement it with additional reading, in addition to those already indicated for attending.
The lessons are held on Monday 17-19 (Torresani Room), Tuesday-Wednesday 13-15 (Seminar Room I); the start is scheduled September 24, 2018 (First cicle). The professor respects the four-hour academic qualification, to allow students who attend classes in the previous or other time, to comfortably reach the lesson class.
Teaching methods
Conventional Lessons, seminars and workshop
The method is conventional lectures; you will be asked to students during the lessons , to express their positions on the topics discussed .
Visual aids will be used (video projector and direct viewing of presentations in computer graphics , CD - Rom and DVD ) , and any paper documents to facilitate the understanding and the student's approach to the matter . At the end of the lessons we will be given presentations in PP as guidelines for the examination.
The frequency is recommended, in how much important to understand the complexity of the discipline and as orientation in sight of the examination.
Assessment methods
Oral examination-test, for evaluation of the degree of theoretical knowlewdge and critical talent in the discipline. This usually consists of questions, some pertaining to the overview lecture part and reading, and others related to specific topics examined in the course. The examination is intended to assess the level of knowledge and understanding gained by students.
The assessment will thus consider the student's:
- knowledge and understanding of the topics covered;
- ability to summarise and analyse themes and concepts;
- familiarity with the terminology associated with the subject and his ability to use it effectively.
Top marks will be awarded to a student displaying an ability to provide an overall understanding of the topics discussed during the lectures, combined with a critical approach to the material and a confident and effective use of the appropriate terminology
Average marks will be awarded to a student who has memorized the main points of the material and is able to summarise them satisfactorily and provide an effective critical commentary, while failing to display a complete command of the appropriate terminology.
A student will be deemed to have failed the exam if he displays significant errors in his understanding and failure to grasp the overall outlines of the subject, together with a poor command of the appropriate terminology.
The exam sessions are monthly (except August) and distributed approximately between 15 and 20 of each month.
The students can enroll in the examination through the system Almaesami.
Teaching tools
To use during the lessons: video-projector,presentation (PP), CD-ROM, DVD and photocopies; presentation (PP) is at students disposisional.
The use of the video projector is aimed at the presentation in PP , as the guideline of the lesson , and for watching movies ; PP presentations will be provided to students at the end of the course to help prepare the examination .
