Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student: - knows the general issues of socialisation processes considered from a sociological point of view; - understands and knows how to apply the concept of socialisation, its meanings, individual and collective subjects, based on the theoretical frameworks developed in particular by classical sociology.

Course contents

The course content will focus on the main theories of socialisation processes and socialisation agencies (in particular school and family)

In the first module, the processes of socialisation and the relationship between socialisation and society (in particular: identity construction, family and socialisation styles) and the cultures/models of socialisation will be exposed.

In the second module, the focus will be on the two main socialisation agencies, school and family.

Finally, the third module will focus on analysing gender identity (socialisation and sex roles, socialisation and gender differences in post-modern society, gender construction, stereotypes, reproduction and signs of change).

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, insights, discussion in the classroom and videos related to the topics of the course. In addition, students will be able to carry out group work on topics agreed with the teacher who will present the salient results in the classroom and the elaboration of a final report that will contribute to the definition of the final vote.


Frequency is not obligatory, but strongly recommended.

Assessment methods

The final exam will consist in oral examination.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disabilities are encouraged to contact the teacher if they wish to evaluate the possibility of adapting the exam or if they have special needs for lessons as well.
