Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to transmit the basic knowledge concerning field research in archaeology, i.e. excavation, survey and classification of finds. Once the course is finished, the student is able to master the following procedures: 1. the main excavation techniques and the stratigraphical method, from a theoretical and practical standpoint; 2. the main research techniques in the field of archaeological survey; 3. The proper study and classification of archaeological finds.

Course contents

The course is divided in two modules. The first is focussed on the history of archaeology and the key concepts of the discipline. The second module is dedicated to the methodologies of fieldwork (survey and excavation), finds analysis, data processing.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of an oral colloquium, conceived in order to evaluate the accomplishment of the main targets of the course. The final mark is the average of the evaluation of the answers concerning three specific topics whichwere part of the program.

Teaching tools

The course will be organised in lectures held by the teacher himself. The teacher will sometimes make use of an overhead-projector, computer presentations and photocopies of the texts. All these tools will be available on-line on the web-page of the course, at the end of it.
