Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The student is expected to learn the basis of sociology. In particular, the student is expect to learn: - the transformation processes in cultural consumption - the systems of social communication and information.

Contenuti

After a short introduction to present what sociology is as a discipline and its main methods, we will briefly present the origins and developments of urban sociology and those of the sociology of culture and the arts, focusing on the visual arts to illustrate that domain.

Then lectures will develop two main topics: the spatial embedeedness of artistic activities in the cities on the one hand and the internationalization (or the so-called “globalization”) of culture and artistic goods on the other hand. The analysis of the link between territory and culture will thus combine a local and a global perspective.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the class is multiple. Students should get familiarized both with sociology (especially the two domains of urban sociology and sociology of art, but also with sociological reasoning and methods which should help them in developing their master thesis and especially their own problematic and empirical data to explore it) and with the visual arts sector, which should help them to find an internship in that domain and / or develop their master thesis on such institutions as art galleries and museums or contemporary art centers, auction houses, art fairs and biennials, etc.
