Learning outcomes

The course aims to investigate the elements that characterize the media cultures of English-speaking countries. At the end of the course students: - have learned the characterizing elements of Anglophone cultures; - are able to put the domestic media structure in a comparative perspective with the models coming from Anglophone countries; - have the tools to investigate the literary, cinematographic, television and musical production of Anglophone countries.

Course contents

The course will examine some central figures of 1960s British pop culture, investigating their impact on the culture and society of the time and the role of the media in the construction of their image. It will look at figures from the world of music (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, The Who, David Bowie), film (Richard Lester, Antonioni, Hammer House, as well as actors and actresses such as Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie, Rita Tushingam, Michael Caine), photography (Bailey, Duffy), visual arts (David Hamilton, Paolozzi, Peter Blake, Jann Haworth, Pauline Boty), football (George Best), fashion (Mary Quant, Biba). In addition to the scandals of the period, from the obscenity trial of the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover to the Profumo scandal.

Oral exam (15-20 minutes).
