Learning outcomes

Through the comparative study of handbooks of Italian philology, the course will examine the instruments of ecdotic applied to Italian literature. During the course will be examined in particular catalogues, rhyming dictionaries, indexes, archives, philological reviews, collections of texts, ancient and modern literary histories, in order to train the students to a philological perspective not extemporaneous but systematic and in-depth.

Course contents

The Course includes two sections: the first section (Section a) will provide a deepening of the Italian Philological method (10 hours); the second section (Section b) will focus on Dante's lectures held by Giovanni Pascoli at the University of Bologna from 1905 to 1911, with the analytical examination of the autographed manuscripts, to evaluate the phases that can lead to their critical edition (20 hours).

Teaching methods

The Course is organized in fifteen frontal lessons of two hours that will be held during the first semester of the Academic Year 2022-2023 (second period). It primarily concerns the deepening of theoretical and methodological elements of the critical edition. In the second part of the Course, the methodological knowledge will be applied to the study of Dante's lectures held by Giovanni Pascoli at the University of Bologna between 1905 and 1911.

Assessment methods

Oral examination.

The examination involves the knowledge of the Philological methodology applied to Italian Literature, with analysis of texts to verify aspects and methods of a modern critical edition.

During the examination will be valued the capacity to elaborate a methodological and critical discourse related to Giovanni Pascoli's teaching activity on Dante.

Teaching tools

Frontal lessons, including oral and written applications. The teacher is to disposition, in the hours of reception and after the lessons, to furnish papers or further elucidations on the examination and the program.
