Diplomatic art in early modern Europe

The course intends to illustrate the mechanisms of diplomacy and the figures of diplomats in early modern Europe. In light of recent historiography, the ars diplomatica will not only be regarded as an appendix to the history of international relations, but open to the stimuli and contaminations deriving from political, social and cultural history.

The course will be part of an introductory part, in which they will provide general guidance on the development of diplomatic systems and on the figure of the ambassador in the framework of ancient Europe.

It will show the path that, since the birth of permanent diplomacy in the Italian states, led to the extinction of the system to the great European states And the promotion of the rule of law.

Next, we will analyze the different types of diplomatic sources (treaties, instructions, billboards, reports, etc.).

Particular attention will be given to the practice of diplomacy at the European courts of the modern age and the production of the treatise on the figure of the ambassador in the political reflection on the reason of state and on other figures such as the courtesan, the secretary, the confessor, etc.

If stable diplomacy has been one of the innovative and crucial components of the history of modern Europe, in the next module (Politics and historiography of the modern age) we will deal with biography as a historical and historiographic genre, strategic for reconstructing political activity and relationship in ancient regime.
